Enkele boeren wezen op de mogelijke rol van de trein die grote hoeveelheden organisch afval vanuit Rome naar het Afval Energiebedrijf (AEB) in Amsterdam brengt. Die stond indertijd regelmatig stil bij station Hilversum. Op het internet verschenen foto’s van gescheurde afvalbalen.Overheidsinstanties verwezen de hypothese van de afvaltrein al snel naar het rijk der fabelen, maar kwamen niet met een alternatieve hypothese. Onafhankelijk onderzoekers Ton Kuik en Marsha Ormskirk komen na diepgravend onderzoek tot de conclusie dat het virus wel degelijk uit Italië afkomstig zou kunnen zijn. Daarnaast wijzen zij op vernatting als mogelijke risicofactor. Vernatte veenweiden bieden een ideale omgeving voor knutten (hele kleine mugjes) die het virus verspreiden.In januari presenteerden zij hun rapport aan de minister van Landbouw. “Het maatschappelijk belang van deze ramp wordt zwaar onderschat”, vertelt Kuik.
