Hina interviews Gerald Ratner!

from Soul & Success · host Hina Solanki

Today Hina speaks with author and motivational speaker Gerald Ratner. They talk about his famous speech in the Albert Hall, business and reinventing yourself. KEY TAKEAWAYS  All Gerald knew as a teenager is that he wanted to work in his Dad’s shops. He ended up doing so when he was expelled from his grammar school for not achieving. It took 20 years for Gerald to then take over the family business, this was when his Dad sadly developed a brain tumour. At this point the shops were losing money so Gerald completely revamped the jewellers and changed them to appeal to a different demographic. It had a phenomenal effect and several years later the company was turning over 200 million. Gerald was invited to speak at the Royal Albert Hall, he was very excited and on advice of a colleague added in some jokes. However, one of the jokes was taken badly and the journalists ran with it framing Gerald as making fun of those who were struggling financially. Gerald knew this was bad press but he expected it to die down and go away, but this was not the case. Gerald ended up hiring a chairman for the business but this resulted in Gerald being fired by the person he hired! He not only lost his job but also a lot of money, his life completely changed in a very short amount of time. In this very difficult time in his life Gerald discovered that health and fitness, in particular cycling, really helped him. It was this that lead him to eventually creating a health club business. It was a success and he later sold the company for 4 million pounds. There are so many people at the moment who need to reinvent themselves. Gerald is an expert in this, he had to completely start from scratch and he has now released a book on exactly that: Reinvent Yourself BEST MOMENTS  “We changed the product, reduced everything in price and showed the discount and started playing pop music!” “It was just a miscalculation and it had absolutely dramatic effects on the company and a lot of employees” “Everything they said was not true” “The one thing that was keeping me sane was cycling” “Sometimes you only appreciate things if you’ve lost it all”   VALUABLE RESOURCES Feel Fabulous Podcast Hina Solanki - https://hinasolanki.com ABOUT THE HOST Hello and welcome to the Feel Fabulous show with Hina Solanki. NEWMORROW SESSIONS - A PodCast Series on the Future of Hospitality Mario C. Bauer, Florian Schneider, Axel Weber & Dr. Tillman Bardt The Newmorrow PodCast is more than a podcast — it's a platform for open dialog on the future of our business, a platform for those building what doesn’t exist yet. Here, we share and embrace our passion for the hospitality industry, but we won’t romanticize the journey. We ask the tough questions, confront uncomfortable truths, and prepare for a future that resists easy answers. We believe that the tougher and wilder times become, the more openly, honestly and humanely people need to talk to each other and act together. We believe, openness, togetherness, and truthfulness should also be cornerstones of a professional community to develop our utopian idea of „open source“. This is a space where visionaries don’t just imagine the future — they wrestle with the paradoxes that shape it: success vs. happiness, data vs. instinct, stability vs. reinvention. Join leaders, entrepreneurs, and thinkers as they share not what made them — but what’s actively shaping them, now and next.
