New York possède une tradition musicale remontant au début du XIX ème siècle et fut un foyer majeur de la naissance de la musique classique des États-Unis puis du jazz, du rock, du blues et du punk. C'est à New York que sont aussi nés la salsa et le hip-hop dans la deuxième moitié du XX ème siècle. Le hip-hop couvre tout un mouvement musical, social et culturel né de la musique de danse noire américaine. Il s’est propagé depuis les quartiers noirs de New York, en particulier Brooklyn et le Bronx. On remonte son origine à la présence dans ses quartiers d’une importante communauté jamaïcaine familière de la pratique des DJ de son île natale, appelés « toasters », ceux-ci improvisant des invitations rythmées à la fête sur des disques de musique instrumentale lors de soirée animées au moyen d’une sonorisation mobile (le sound system). D’abord pratiqué dans la rue lors de block parties (fêtes données autour d’un « bloc » - un pâté de maison) avec un système artisanale de double platines, le hip-hop a suscité diverses techniques dont la première fut le backbeat puis le scratching. Devenant un genre musical à part entière, le hip-hop s’est développé allant jusqu’à l’utilisation de rythmes électroniques et au recours au sampling ( séquences empruntés à des disques déjà existants).
