    Homeric Rhapsody: Iliad I

    Release Date: 09/05/2020

    Authors: A P David

Description: Welcome to the Homeric Rhapsody podcast! These brief meditations will be renderings of Homer’s poem in Greek, following the new theory of the Greek accent from my Oxford book, The Dance of the Muses: Choral Theory and Ancient Greek Poetics. After the Greek, I shall perform my impression of the lines in English. The rhapsodes were solo performers of Homer who declaimed in a theatre, draping a traveler’s cloak and wielding a long staff as a multivalent prop. So there was more to Homeric rhapsody than the audio. Yet how remarkable and unique is Homer’s text, whose rhythm originally accompanied a dactylic round dance, but unlike any other song lyrics known to me, becomes numinous as spoken poetry; these verses harbour moments of transcendent lyric, amid the potency of the greatest dramatic verse.

The Iliad for Boys and Girls by Alfred J. Church

    Release Date: 09/23/2020

    Authors: Loyal Books

Description: Echoing Homer’s epic poem The Iliad, Church offers a simplified rendering of the classic siege of Troy, as he retells the story which is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of Western literature. The Iliad for Boys and Girls is written in an easy to follow style that is certain to provide clarity to the otherwise perplexing tale presented in Homer’s original. Furthermore, the tale explores various themes including the destructive nature of pride, grueling revenge, honor, and the capricious interference of the Ancient Greek gods in temporal affairs.Set in the tenth year of the Trojan War, the story unfolds when the Greek commander in chief Agamemnon and his unrivaled warrior Achilles find themselves in disagreement over a beautiful maiden who is held captive. Insulted for having to give up the girl, Achilles is overwhelmed by fury as he decides to withdraw from fighting in the war as a means to spite Agamemnon for his inconsiderate demand. Additionally, he desires to witness

The Adventures of Ulysses by Charles Lamb

    Release Date: 09/23/2020

    Authors: Loyal Books

Description: In The Adventures of Ulysses, Charles Lamb re-tells the story of Ulysses’s journey from Troy to his own kingdom of Ithaca. The book uses Homer’s The Odyssey as the basis for the story, but it isn’t a direct translation of the Greek classic. The book is considered a modern version of the epic tale when it was published in 1808. In the preface of the book, Lamb said that he made the narration of the story faster so that more readers would be attracted to it. To begin with, Homer’s Odyssey is already a classic and in re-telling this story, Charles Lamb aimed to make this epic poem more comprehensible to the average person. And he was successful in doing what he aimed for. The book became very popular not just to adults but also among children because it was well-written and can be easily understood. Lamb was really talented in bringing deep, hard to understand works of literature close to the masses. Before The Adventures of Ulysses, Lamb also wrote Tales From Shakespeare in which some
