No listener questions this week, buuuuut, triple your Balderdash, triple your fun! Special Guest Ken, of the Antiques Freaks Podcast, stops by to quiz me on some words no one outside of the 19th c. or a horse barn would know. Ken & Co. prepared THREE rounds of Balderdash for me! I should not have been surprised that the first word had a nautical theme. Will I be able to find the correct definitions of Tom Astoner, skewbald, and rainscald? I might, if I can stop making cultural asides.  After the break, we delve into early Fall in New England. I need a cider donut. When you're at the Garlic and Arts Festival, the compostable, corn plastic cutlery melts in the trash, not in your mouth. And what's up with that delightful, sweet smell of crunchy, fallen leaves?  Where to go in New Bedford for a historical time? Ken has answers! Join us as we question Melville's motives and plot a course for Ishmael to maybe, someday, get on a flippin' boat already.  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *   Join the conversation in the New Yankee Wordshop group. Yankee Girl at Fort Sumter, A by Alice Turner Curtis (1860 - 1958) LibriVox Sylvia Fulton is a ten-years-old girl from Boston who stayed in Charleston, South Carolina, before the opening of the Civil War. She loves her new home, and her dear friends. However, political tensions are rising, and things start to change. Through these changes, Silvia gets to know the world better: from Estrella, her maid, she starts to understand what it is to be a slave, from her unjust teacher she learns that not all beautiful people are perfect, and from the messages she carries to Fort Sumter she learns what is the meaning of danger. However, this is a lovely book, written mostly for children.(Summary by Stav Nisser)
