"How Do I Talk to My Son About Growing Up?" (Marriage Unhindered)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

In this episode of Marriage Unhindered, Doug Hinderer teams up with his therapist daughter, Monica. It’s part of a series they’re doing on tough conversations with kids, and today, they’re keeping it real. You can get the whole episode here; not all information will be suitable for sensitive ears.   Doug and Monica start by acknowledging that while some parents might face extreme issues like gender confusion or dealing with the latest "woke" ideas about sexuality, most parents are just trying to figure out how to help their kids grow up with solid values, especially when it comes to sexuality.    💬 Then we hear from John in Orlando. He’s a dad with four daughters and one son, and while talking to his daughters about these things was pretty straightforward, his 15-year-old son is a different story. Every time John tries to bring up the topic, his son is completely grossed out and wants nothing to do with it. John’s worried because, growing up, he didn’t get any guidance after his parents divorced, and he doesn’t want his son to go down the same path.   Monica suggests starting with why the topic makes his son so uncomfortable. Instead of just pushing through, she says it’s important to figure out what’s going on in his head. Sure, the conversation will still be awkward, but at least his son will feel like he can talk about it without being judged.   Doug jumps in with some dad-to-dad advice: Be the safe space for your son. Let him know that he can come to you with anything, no matter how awkward or embarrassing it seems. The goal isn’t just to get through one tough talk but to build a relationship where he knows he can always count on you for honest advice.   By the end of the call, John’s feeling a lot better. Even though he’s been in healthcare and teaching for years, he admits that parenting is a whole different ballgame. With Doug and Monica’s tips, he’s ready to have that talk with his son, knowing it’s a step towards helping him grow up strong and confident. 🙌   So, if you’re dreading that talk with your kid, just remember: it’s all about making them feel safe, understood, and loved—awkwardness and all.      The best way to listen to the Best of the Week is on our #1 Free Catholic App. It’s free, and always will be!
