How to talk to kids about white supremacy and the violence at the Capitol.

from Sharla’s Badass Black Women podcast formerly Healing Racism in Schools · host Sharla Stevens and The Ancestors, M. Ed

“How do I talk to my kids about the Capitol?” “How do I talk to my students about white supremacy?” It’s easier than you think. In this episode, you’ll hear me talking to my first and third grade children about white supremacy and what happened at he Capitol. Granted my family and I have been talking like this for years, but what I hope to demonstrate is the capacity of children to understand complicated topics. Use topics they understand. Make it plain and do your best to make sense of it from THEIR perspective. Ask lots of questions. And understand their attention span, like yours, is limited. My son tends to be more emotionally affected when we have these talks, so also pay attention when it’s time to wrap it up and give your kids time to be kids. These talks aren’t easy, but unfortunately they are very necessary. Need help facilitating these discussions or training your school staff in antiracism, schedule a call www.sharlastevensconsulting.com/
