Hunt Gather Parent Episode 2

from The SLP Book Club

This week we're discussing chapters two, three, and four from Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. Where do our current parenting practices come from? In chapter two, we take a look at the origins of things like sleep training and feeding schedules. You'll be surprised when you hear where they came from and how long they've been around. We also discuss whether toys are really as beneficial for children as we think they are, whether we praise children too much, and why we're constantly trying to crowbar learning into every experience a child has. In chapter two, Michaeleen travels to the Yucatan Peninsula to spend time with a Maya family and learn acomedido. In chapter four, she describes specific strategies for teaching children how to be acomedido, that is, how to teach children to be helpful and do chores voluntarily.Head to patreon.com/theslpbookclub/membership to join our new interactive online book club community!
