from Identity Insights: The G2 Weekly Podcast · host Ralph A. Rodriguez

The G2 Weekly Podcast delivers insights into the world of identity and biometrics. Each week, the podcast will cover important developments in the field, making it a valuable resource for professionals in various sectors. (November 19, 2024 - November 26, 2024) ● The Growing Demand for Age Assurance Technologies: Regulators worldwide are pushing for stricter age verification measures to protect minors online and in retail settings. This has led to the rapid development and deployment of age assurance technologies, particularly in the social media, gaming, and e-commerce sectors. In the UK, the Online Safety Act is set for enforcement in January 2025, while in Australia, proposed amendments to the Online Safety Act aim to ban social media for children under 16 and mandate age checks on adult websites. ● Innovations in Biometric Age Assurance: Biometric technologies, particularly facial age estimation, are being increasingly adopted for age verification purposes. Examples include Privately's AgeAI app used in Irish retail outlets to prevent underage vaping and IKE Tech's vaping platform in the UK that integrates biometric verification via smartphone apps. Russia is also exploring biometric age checks for online alcohol sales using its Unified Biometric System. ● The Rise of Deepfakes and AI-Driven Fraud: Deepfake technology is advancing rapidly, posing a significant threat to biometric security systems and identity verification processes. Reports indicate deepfake attacks are occurring every five minutes, highlighting the urgent need for better detection tools. The DefAI Project is specifically focused on integrating deepfake detection into age assurance technologies to counter this emerging threat. ● Legal Disputes Surrounding BIPA: The Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) in Illinois continues to be a focal point for legal battles, with ongoing disputes over the application of recent amendments that limit liability to one count per biometric process. Two major cases involving employee fingerprint scans are challenging the retroactive application of these amendments, creating legal uncertainty for businesses operating in Illinois. ● Global Expansion of Digital Identity Ecosystems: Governments and industries worldwide are increasingly embracing digital identity solutions, including mobile driver's licenses (mDLs) and digital wallets. Colorado, Iowa, and Ohio are introducing new mDL use cases, while Maryland has launched an app enabling businesses to verify mDLs and digital IDs. The UK's Digital Verification Bill is also progressing, albeit amidst debates about inclusivity and privacy. Internationally, Russia, Bermuda, and Eswatini are advancing digital identity frameworks, further demonstrating the global momentum behind these technologies.
