Set in 1970 in a beach community, we meet Larry "Doc" Sportello, who for lack of a better term, is as dirty as hippies come. Doc is a private investigator who is randomly visited by a previous lover, who is desperately asking for his help in protecting her new lover, Mickey, a successful real estate agent from his wife and her lover, who want to get him locked up in an insane asylum.
