Inquiring Of The Lord

from John Wasserman Podcast · host John Wasserman

In the Old Testament, the priests and leaders of Israel inquired from the Lord by using the Urim and the Thummim which were on the High Priest’s breastplate, the Ephod. However, it became problematic in that instead of having a relationship with God and hearing His voice, they only relied only on the Thummim which eventually became an idol to the Children of Israel. They would also experience at times that there was no answer from God to their inquiry. In the New Testament, it is written that God does not listen to sinners. The times that they did not receive an answer from God, were probably because their way of enquiring was no longer in accordance with God’s prescribed specifications, which was that the person performing the ritual of inquiry had to be holy before the Lord. How do we hear God without having a Urim and Thummim? When we go before God, He is looking at us, measuring us. In the Book of Revelation, it says that we are shining like a precious stone. This is because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Urim and Thummim stand for Alpha and Omega – the first and last (Christ) who is in our hearts. We do not need a physical device that can become an idol because God is inside of us, in relationship with us and we can turn directly to Him for every answer that we need.
