  • RETIRE TO LIFE

    02/12/2024

Jean Brooks started her career in financial services in 1983.  Her skills expanded to include business development, financial compliance, insurance, lending, and management.  In 2011, she left that world and was able to devote her time to developing an idea she had about helping people transition into retirement.  Thus, Retire to Life! was born. Retire to Life! is a seminar that helps individuals answer the question:  What are you going to do with the next 20 to 30 years of your life that will make your retirement meaningful, exciting, relaxing and fulfilling? In addition to this workshop, Jean’s other passion is performing.  She is involved in films, commercials, theatre, and cabaret.  These talents have served her well in her Retire to Life! presentations. Jean graduated with honors from Temple University with a B.B.A. in Business Management.  She also trained at the Graduate School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia.  She has been involved with many not-for-profit organizations including The Mann Center for the Performing Arts, Women’s Way, Montgomery County Big Brothers Big Sisters, and a variety of professional associations.

  • When to retire

    11/16/2019

At a time when we’re living longer, healthier lives should we do away with the notion of retirement and just keep on working? Are the skills of older people adequate, and are they even wanted in a youth-obsessed society? Ed Butler will be discussing the financial drivers behind working longer, the social benefits of being actively employed and the choices that governments, employers and individuals need to make to prepare for older age. Our guests this week are Samuel Engblom, Policy director at The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees from Stockholm, Margaret Heffernan, executive coach and author in London and Steve Vernon, author and Research Scholar at the Stanford Center on Longevity, California. Plus, we take a visit to The Common Room, a new concept in intergenerational thinking. (Image: Older woman selling flower bouquet. Image credit: Getty)

  • To retire or not retire? with Alastair Henry

    01/02/2018

Alastair Henry is today’s guest on The Segilola Salami Show. When Alastair retired at age 57, he unknowingly asked himself to retire or not retire? Alastair shares with us his life’s journey from emigrating to Canada at age 19 to retiring at age 57 but coming out of retirement and living a life he never imagined and how it led to him writing his first book. I assure you, you need to click play now. About Alastair Henry Alastair was born in Glasgow, Scotland, grew up in Lancashire, England, and at 19 immigrated to Canada by himself.  He became a typical yuppie with a family, a house in the suburbs, and a big job in the corporate sector. At age 46, he went into business for himself.  Following London Life’s Freedom 55 plan, he retired at 57 and went to live in the country. But 2 years later, disillusioned with the passivity of an early retirement and in search of adventure and greater personal fulfilment, he sold up everything and went to live with a small First Nations band in a remote fly-in location in Canada’s far north. The experience was life-changing. Over the next 10 years, he became an international development volunteer, a world traveller (backpacking S. E. Asia and Central America), an author of 4 books and is now an entertainer (professional storyteller) Now 73, Alastair lives in London, Ontario with his partner Candas, and is very involved with 2 of his youngest 7 grandchildren. You can find out more about Alastair and his books on Amazon by clicking here.   About The Segilola Salami Show The Segilola Salami show is hosted by Segilola Salami who is also an author and a blogger.
