The film grossed over $105 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese "Godzilla" film of all time; it crossed over into the U.S., where it received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and now has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects making it the first film in the 70-year-old franchise to receive an Academy Award nomination.
