Is the Bible the Basis for Catholicism? (Father Simon Says)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

In this episode of Father Simon Says, Fr. Richard Simon chats with Jimmy from Atlanta, who’s got a real head-scratcher of a question: "Can the Bible really be the basis for Catholicism?"   Jimmy's Dilemma   Every time Jimmy tries to talk about his Catholic faith at work, his coworkers fire back with, "The Bible can’t be the basis for your faith—it was written by men!" 😵   Father Simon's Take   The Church Matters: Father agrees that the Bible alone isn’t enough. It’s very important, but it needs the Church to bring out its full meaning. 🏛️   History's Backup: The Church has been around for 2,000 years, preserving and interpreting Jesus’ teachings. Early Christians, like St. Ignatius of Antioch, who learned straight from the apostles, give us that direct link to the truth.   Divine Inspiration: Sure, humans wrote the Bible, but they were inspired by the Holy Spirit. It's basically the story of humanity’s relationship with God, packed with wisdom and truth. 📜   Flawed Yet Loved: The Bible shows us that even people who mess up big time, like Abraham, are still loved by God. It’s real, raw, and relatable.   Faithful History: The Church’s 2,000-year history, combined with the Bible’s narrative, gives us thousands of years of God being faithful. The Holy Spirit has guided the Church through good and bad leaders.   Great Read: For skeptics, Fr. Simon suggests William Crocker’s book, "Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church". It’s an eye-opener on how God has been faithful to the Church. 📚   The Big Takeaway   The Bible is amazing, but it needs the Church’s tradition and teachings to be fully understood. With the Holy Spirit’s guidance, the Church has kept God’s word intact and continues to be a solid foundation of faith and truth. So, if someone challenges you about Catholicism, remember, it’s all about the Bible and the Church together. 🙏✨   God bless you, Jimmy!
