The environment domain is not just about turnout or housing. It shapes stress levels, freedom of expression, physical comfort, and ultimately the horse’s mental state. Many modern horse environments prioritise human convenience over species-appropriate living, often without us realising the welfare cost. Using real-world examples, research insights, and practical experience, this episode examines how stables, small paddocks, isolation, and restricted choice influence behaviour, health, and emotional well-being - and why many so-called “behaviour problems” are actually environmental welfare signals.
