JCIP #148 - Dulcie Jones

from The Just Checking In Podcast · host The Just Checking In Podcast by VENT

In episode 148 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Dulcie Jones. Dulcie currently works as a support time recovery worker in the NHS. Dulcie always had an ambition to become a therapist and during the first Covid-19 lockdown, she felt the urge to pursue this dream fully and left her previous job as a casting director in the arts industry. Dulcie’s day-to-day now involves supporting clients with severe mental health challenges or conditions to reintegrate into society, stop them feeling isolated and improve their independence. In this episode we talk about the work she does, her ambitions in the future to become a fully qualified therapist and the satisfaction she gets from her job. For Dulcie’s mental health, it revolves around a period of difficulty aged 11 where she was sick once in school. After that moment, Dulcie began having panic attacks that she would be sick again and became absent from school until her school nurse recommended she be checked for diabetes to find out what was going on. After many tests, Dulcie was told by her doctors that the problem was completely mental and she then went on an intense course of therapy to find out what the problem was and overcome it. We talk about that process, where the trigger for this fear of vomiting came from and how she looks back on it now as an adult.
