JCIP #172 - Matt Henry

In episode 172 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Matt Henry. Matt is the Founder of YouTube channels 'How To Help Incels' and 'Dad Helping Dads'. Matt is a former incel who 'ascended' in his mid-20s and is now happily married with four children.Matt helps other incels ascend by discussing the issues within incel culture, breaks down myths and challenges their mindset. Matt provides a nuance perspective on this group of men which many in mainstream culture deride, abandon and some even label as terrorists.Matt had a very traumatic childhood, which was driven by his relationship with his mother who had attachment issues, alienated him from his father and was a survivor of sex trafficking. Matt grew up with Autism and also ended up developing other neurological conditions, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and mental health issues including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Matt was also sexually abused by his high-school principal and all of these life events contributed towards him becoming an Incel and adopting that worldview for a period of his life. Thankfully, thanks to the role of three strong grandmothers and his own courage, his desire for self-development and developing social skills through his love of acting, Matt ascended and now helps others to take the path he did.In this episode we discuss that journey from Incel to functioning member of society, how a form of therapy called Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) turned his life around and how his faith gave him a compass to follow towards happiness. We also discuss how we practically help incels ascend like he did, making sure the next generation of men and boys follow the right path and avoid labelling them as inherently toxic.
