John 13 - Did Jesus know He would be betrayed?

R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEMORIZE-PRAY)This is what I READ: The context is the Passover celebration. Jesus is having one final meal with His disciples before He is betrayed. Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father (vs 1)Jesus knew that He had authority over everything (vs 3)Jesus knew Judas would betray Him (vs 3, 26-27).Jesus knew Peter would deny Him (vs 38).Jesus loved His disciples to the end (vs 1).Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to teach them about servanthood (vs 4-17).Jesus gives a new commandment to love others like He loved them (vs 34-35).The crucifixion was not a surprise. Jesus knew what was coming. He knew that he was going to be betrayed, denied, and crucified. He knew that He was returning to the Father in Heaven, and that He had authority over everything (ie - God had given all things into His hands). Just let those truths sink in. He was going to be betrayed, denied, and crucified, and He had the power to stop it. But he didn’t. Jesus went to the cross because of the JOY set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). What was that JOY? It was the redemptive work of saving the people He loved. On that night Jesus didn’t just say that He loved His disciples - He showed them the full extent of His love in the washing of their feet. Not more than 24 later, Jesus would show it to them in an even greater way on the cross. APPLY:Jesus gave a new commandment that night to love each other like He loved them. The same heart of sacrifice - the same willingness to lay aside our rights. I am challenged by that because I know so often the thing that I call “love” looks very different than what Jesus modeled. I still see in my own heart a desire to “get,” not sacrifice, and I’m praying that God continues to show me where I fall short, so that my love can look more and more like His. MEDITATE:Philippians 2:5-7 - “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” PRAY: Jesus, please teach me to love and sacrifice for others just like You.
