Kansas Election Officials Find Few Noncitizen Voters
from Topeka News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Seven months after Kansas officials warned of hundreds—or even thousands—of noncitizens voting illegally, only three criminal cases have been publicly confirmed. The most prominent involved former Coldwater Mayor Jose Ceballos, a permanent resident who pleaded guilty to lesser charges, received probation, but was later detained by immigration authorities. Attorney General Kris Kobach and Secretary of State Scott Schwab initially claimed widespread illegal voting, with Schwab noting seven referrals to his office. Beyond Ceballos, two other cases are ongoing: Jose Luis Gomez Sr., currently in Oklahoma custody pending deportation, and Edwin Francisco Ramirez-Guerra, whose case is still developing with a hearing scheduled for June 18th. Interestingly, Schwab admitted the SAVE system—used to verify immigration status—was not involved in Ceballos’s case, which was flagged through immigration channels instead.
