Questions for Discussion: In many places, the Torah speaks of a unique relationship between God and the Jewish people, often referred to in the language of “chosenness.” Here, through the prophet Amos, God warns the people that if they sin, they are just like any other nation in God’s eyes. • To what extent do we excuse our behavior—whether as individuals, Jews, or Americans–by telling ourselves that we are somehow special or exceptional, and therefore exempt from the consequences of our behavior?
