The cruel demon king Kansa was the king of Mathura. Kansa married his dear sister Devki off to his close friend Vasudev. On the day of the wedding, a celestial voice warned Kansa that the 8th offspring of Devki and Vasudev will be the one who will kill Kansa.Kansa first tried to kill them right away but then seeing them plead, he agreed to spare their lives but jailed them both in his kingdom.  As time passed Devki gave birth to 6 sons, which were killed by Kansa. When Devki became pregnant for the seventh time, the unborn child was sent by Lord Vishnu to be raised in the womb of Vasudev’s first wife Rohini.When Devki gave birth to her eighth son, Lord Vishnu asked Vasudev to carry the child to Gokul to be raised by his friend Nand Ji. Vasudev did as instructed and from Gokul, he brought back Nand and his wife Yashoda’s newly born daughter.Kansa came to know about the birth of the eighth child of Devki who was a daughter.
