En 2009 Serrat graba junto a Joan Albert Amargós un segundo disco en homenaje al poeta Miguel Hernández, de título Hijo de la luz y de la sombra, que es editado en febrero de 2010 y el Ministerio de Cultura de España le concede el Premio Nacional de Músicas Actuales en su primera edición. En marzo de ese mismo año, es operado con éxito de un nódulo pulmonar que le habían diagnosticado en un control rutinario. Es dado de alta 5 días después, pero este hecho retrasa la gira de su disco Hijo de la luz y de la sombra que se inicia finalmente el 23 de abril en Elche
