LAL Live: Overton or Underton? Poll Analysis + Reparations with W. Michael Boyer (NPS July 26)

from Law and Legitimacy

Norm has W. Michael Boyer join LAL Live for a double dose on this Tuesday show. Michael is the producer of Law and Legitimacy and business attorney located south of the Mason-Dixon line.  In the first hour, the duo grapples with the Washington Post's recent analysis of the results of a University of Chicago Insitute of Politics' recent poll (read here: https://apple.news/Ahiyn-5D-T8uRtAaQ8u9L9Q).  Norm is troubled by the growing sense of a lack of legitimacy in the country. Michael is a bit more measured with his analysis but maintains that the psychology of the current cultural moment is marked by an obvious decline in the sense of community in America. Michael believes that people now more than ever suffer from a feeling that they are not being seen an heard.  Valued listener, Dorothy, calls in to agree with Norm and Mike and to share how the onset of the pandemic and related policy implementation has affected her along these lines.  Norm takes a few more calls from listeners in the first hour as he and Mike discuss the myriad ways that the decline in community can be seen and sensed in modern America.  In the second hour, Norm makes a hard pivot to a discussion of reparations. He asked Mike to unpack what is going on in the city of High Point, North Carolina, with the formation of the One High Point Commission—a City Council created body funded and charged with the delivery of a report that will ostensibly dictate how reparations should be delivered to members of the African American community in High Point.  Mike talks about the 'laboratory approach' he is seeing take shape in the interested parties' approach to finding suitable legal ground on which to build the defensible case for reparations—race-based transfer payments.  This is a saga that will be revisited often as new updates are available.  Like, share, and subscribe! Norm is live every weekday from 12pm ET to 2pm ET on WICC 600AM/107.3FM. Stream Norm live at https://www.wicc600.com/. Follow @PattisPodcast on Twitter!
