Le Corps qui Saigne

from Les Voix du Corps | Voices of A Body

The overarching theme in this third episode of Voices of a BOdy is, sadly, shame, and the overwhelming feeling of having to be discreet, to hide your period from the world. Mercifully, many amazing authors (hello claire baker!) today publish work that should help the younger generations break the stigma around their periods. What does it mean, as a teen, to get your first period in a patriarchal society? How does it feel to enter the “reproductive” phase of the body, often lightyears before you want to even think about having children? What messages and core beliefs are passed on from our elders at that time? How does that impact the way you view your own body and its changes as you grow-up? Shout out to the Dads of this episode who had an appropriate reaction to their teen daughters' first ever period. Do we really have to go rock-climbing or horse-riding like the blue-blooded Barbies from the TV tampon adverts?
