The author of Hebrews likens living a faithful life to running a race with perseverance, throwing off anything that hinders or entangles us (Hebrews 12:1). The Christian life is a relay race, in which someone else handed us the baton that we will inevitably hand off to someone else. We are called to be faithful with our stretch of the race!  In the preceding chapter, the author explains that faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Even though we may not be able to see the finish line, we run the race marked out for us and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
