Almost 80% of households in Leitrim and Sligo still reliant on high carbon fuels for home heating, a new report has found. In Donegal, the figure is 85%. The report found that home heating oil is the most commonly used source in the North West. The new data published by Liquid Gas Ireland has been examining national trends in home heating energy sources based on CSO Census data from 2011 - 2022. Other key highlights include that Donegal households are highest users of coal in the country at 11%, while turf is used by 6% of households in Leitrim and 8% of in Sligo. Liquid Gas Ireland Policy Director Philip Hannon says the government's current approach has left those in rural areas with little option:
