Mama’s Boy and Daddy’s GirlThere’s a pattern I’ve seen again and again in couples work and in Family Constellations — what you might call the mama’s boy and daddy’s girl dynamic.When a man is deeply entangled with his mother — perhaps emotionally fused or still unconsciously trying to be her partner or caretaker — he often struggles to fully show up in his relationship with his wife or partner. There’s a part of him still taken.Likewise, a woman who remains loyal to her father — consciously or unconsciously — may struggle to open to her partner’s masculine presence. She might still be the daughter who idealized her dad or never truly said goodbye to him in her soul.In Family Constellation work, we see that when a man remains a son first, and not a partner, or when a woman remains a daughter first, and not a partner — the couple cannot meet in the present as man and woman.The movement of the soul requires that we give our parents back their rightful place — and then step fully into our own.
