In this passage, Jesus is questioned about why his disciples don’t follow the religious patterns of the day — especially fasting. His answer contrasts the rigid, performance-based system of the Pharisees with the grace-filled presence of Jesus, who invites us not into a better method, but into a new identity, new righteousness, and new relationship with God.
