Hello! This is not quite the episode we had intended to record. It was our first try. Future episodes will ACTUALLY include listener questions about English and Portuguese, more concrete remembrances of time spent in New England and Brazil, and some real quizzes and games will go down. We talked in a circle, got lost, figured out where we should have gone, and had to spend the night in the woods anyway, so to speak.  This episode we seem to have managed to cover times of day, a little about meals, and some local news stories that will end up as a non-sequitur in the grand scheme of things. So...it is what it is.  Do you have a question about English or Portuguese language, culture, history, travel, food, grammar, idioms, slang, etc.? You can join our New Yankee Wordshop Facebook group and leave a question there, or, even better, record your question using the link below! You can ask in English or Portuguese, we (or at least one of us) understand(s) both!  https://anchor.fm/new-yankee-wordshop/message

Yankee Girl at Fort Sumter, A by Alice Turner Curtis (1860 - 1958) LibriVox Sylvia Fulton is a ten-years-old girl from Boston who stayed in Charleston, South Carolina, before the opening of the Civil War. She loves her new home, and her dear friends. However, political tensions are rising, and things start to change. Through these changes, Silvia gets to know the world better: from Estrella, her maid, she starts to understand what it is to be a slave, from her unjust teacher she learns that not all beautiful people are perfect, and from the messages she carries to Fort Sumter she learns what is the meaning of danger. However, this is a lovely book, written mostly for children.(Summary by Stav Nisser)
