Memorial cross to be unveiled at Sligo Cemetery for soldiers
A memorial cross will be unveiled at the National Army Plot at Sligo Cemetery on Saturday June 28th at 11am.The plot has remained unmarked and unattended for most of the last 100 years, and it is known that at least two Soldiers are buried in the plot.They are Private James Byrne and Sergeant James Skeffington. While another soldier, Private Jack Sweeney, is also buried in Sligo Cemetery, but whose grave location is unknown.Local Historian, Kieran Gillen, says that with the help of Sligo Town Men's Shed, a small Memorial Cross will be placed on the grave, giving the people of Sligo a chance to pay respect to three young local men 103 years after their deaths:
