Heels of Justice Sarita Venkat & Katherine Minarik Discover a league of extraordinary women in the legal profession with the Heels of Justice podcast and hosts Sarita Venkat and Katherine Minarik. Each episode, Heels of Justice will share the trailblazing story of a woman lawyer, some you've heard of and many you have not. These are the tales of fierce advocates in government and politics, in courtrooms and boardrooms, women who get deals done and pave the way for the rest of us. Join us as we learn a bit about the law and a lot about how one woman can make all the difference. By Ox Team to California - A Narrative of Crossing the Plains in 1860 Lavinia Honeyman Porter Imagine a young, twenty-something woman in 1860, reared “in the indolent life of the ordinary Southern girl” (which means she has never learned to cook); married to a professional man who knows “nothing of manual labor;” who is mother to a young son; and who has just found out she is pregnant with their second child. Imagine that this couple has become “embarrassed financially” by “imprudent speculations,” and that they are discussing what to do. They decide to buy a wagon and three yoke of unbroken oxen and head overland to California."We were two such precious dunces,” writes Lavinia Honeyman Porter in her autobiographical account of their journey across the plains. “In a short time the six oxen were bought, driven to our home and turned loose in our barnyard--wild brutes, as handy as with their heels as with their horns. Not one of us was brave enough to venture into the corral with them and we soon concluded we had six white elephants on our hands.” From there on in, Lavini Hoosier Schoolmaster, The by Edward Eggleston (1837 - 1902) LibriVox "Want to be a school-master, do you? You? Well, what would you do in Flat Crick deestrick, I'd like to know? Why, the boys have driv off the last two, and licked the one afore them like blazes. You might teach a summer school, when nothin' but children come. But I 'low it takes a right smart man to be school-master in Flat Crick in the winter. They'd pitch you out of doors, sonny, neck and heels, afore Christmas." (Summary from Chapter 1) Charles Rex by Ethel M. Dell (1881 - 1939) LibriVox Excerpt: "Saltash was thoroughly cosmopolitan in his tastes; he liked amusement but he abhorred boredom. He was never really wicked unless he was bored. And then- que voulez vous? He did not guide the star of destiny." On his last night in Valrosa, Saltash (Charles Rex) returns to his luxurious yacht to find a stowaway, a young woman disguised as a boy. She pleads to be kept by him in order to escape from her abuser. Although ill used by life she is still very pure and Saltash falls head over heels in love with her. She in turn adores him but he feels unworthy of her. Torn by a sense of duty and fairness he tries to marry her off to someone he believes would be a more suitable match. Romance and mystery, a delightful sprinkle of humour and wit, and wonderful characters make this an emotional read that you will not soon forget. - Summary by Celine Major
