Michael Heiser and the “Divine Council”: A Biblical Response (with Fred Butler)

from Sound Theology and Discernment · host Justin Peters

Psalm 82 opens with the words, "God takes His stand in the congregation of God; He judges in the midst of the gods." What does that mean, and does it support Michael Heiser's "divine council" theology and the idea of many "gods" under one supreme God? In this episode of Sound Theology and Discernment, I'm joined by my friend Fred Butler (Grace to You, Hip and Thigh) to walk through Michael Heiser's teaching on Psalm 82, Deuteronomy 32, Genesis 6, and related passages. We look at how Heiser uses liberal scholarship, ancient Near Eastern myth, and speculative ideas about "watchers," Nephilim, and "divine beings," and we compare all of it with clear, historic, biblical doctrine. Our aim is to help you understand Psalm 82 in its context, to see how Jesus uses it in John 10, and to warn against flirtations with theism, henotheism, and "little gods" language that echo Mormonism and Word of Faith theology. Above all, we want to encourage you not to exceed what is written, but to stand firmly on the sufficient, inerrant Word of God.
