Monday, September 16, 2024 - Springfleld mayor on Trump/Vance: "They're hurting our city"

Sure, I could spend time today handwringing over a second Trump assassination, but I've become desensitized since they just keep happening - much the way America is desensitized to gun violence. So, since the GOP says there's nothing we can do about curbing access to weapons for nuts, why bother? Instead, there's more to know about that goings on in Springfield, Ohio, where a rust belt city's renaissance is largely due to the influx of legal immigrants. Instead, the focus is drawn to a since-retracted social media post that Senator JD Vance still insists carries legitimacy because it casts a negative light on Haitian migrants, and well, because his boss, Donald Trump repeated it on the debate stage and can't be embarrassed by being misled by nonsense, right? While Vance is in Atlanta today to speak to southern evangelicals (seemingly not about what the Bible actually says about being welcoming to the migrant) I was joined today by a pastor in Springfield offering a simple, yet timely message to his city's immigrant community: "I'm glad you are here. Christ loves you, and so do I." That message, being handed out throughout the community to Haitian immigrants, is the sentiment of Pastor Carl Ruby of the Central Christian Church in Springfield. Pastor Ruby does a nice job explaining how his community got to where it is now, why he offers his message to the immigrant community and how we can all pitch in to help by visiting the Haitian Community and Support Center if so inclined to. (PayPal here) Of course, I have some of Vance's back-n-forth with Dana Bash from yesterday, as well, and his umbrage to her quoting the (Republican!) mayor of Springfield casting blame squarely at his and Trunp's rhetoric for all that community's dealt with since last Tuesday night. It's inarguable - as is the downward spiral from the 1980 GOP and its position on immigration (not far from where Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is now) to where that party and its presidential ticket stands today.
