Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun 623 yıllık tarihinde 36 padişah hüküm sürdü. Kuruluş ve yükseliş dönemlerinden sonra gelen duraklama, gerileme ve yıkılış dönemlerinde hanedanın yer yer sarsıldığı ve yönetim zaafiyetlerinin görüldüğü zamanlar oldu. Taht mücadeleleri zaman zaman şehzadelerin katledilmesine kadar uzanan olayların yaşanmasıyla son buldu. Tüm bunların yanısıra, padişahların daha şehzadelik dönemlerinde aldıkları eğitimler onların farklı alanlarda sanatkâr olmalarını da sağlayabildi. Pek çoğu mahlas kullanarak şiirler yazdı, hat sanatı ile ilgilendi, resim yaptı. Ancak, aralarından 18’i “mûsikîşinas” idi.
