Ινώ Αφεντούλη, Εκτελεστική Διευθύντρια του Ινστιτούτου Διεθνών Σχέσεων του Παντείου Πανεπιστημίου. Το 1949, δώδεκα χώρες ίδρυσαν τον Οργανισμό Βορειοατλαντικού Συμφώνου, ή «ΝΑΤΟ», όπως είναι γνωστός, για να εγγυηθούν την ελευθερία και την ασφάλεια τους με πολιτικά και στρατιωτικά μέσα.Μετά το Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, η Βορειοατλαντική Συμμαχία ήταν μια απάντηση στον αυξανόμενο γεωπολιτικό ανταγωνισμό και την απειλή της Σοβιετικού Ένωσης. Από την ίδρυση του ΝΑΤΟ μέχρι σήμερα, άλλαξαν πολλά. Από τις δώδεκα ιδρυτικές χώρες, μέχρι και τις τελευταίες προσθήκες της Φινλανδίας και Σουηδίας, η δομή αλλά και ο ρόλος της Συμμαχίας έχουν αλλάξει.
