New Mexico Weather 3/6 Morning - Red Flag Warning

from The New Mexico Weather Podcast

Good morning. New Mexico. I'm Aaron Jolly. Folks, eastern New Mexico is about to get slammed by some serious wind today. Let me paint the picture. A Pacific cold front is racing statewide right now. Temperatures drop about 24 degrees from yesterday, but that's not the headline. The headline is wind — southwest gusts hitting 50 to 55 miles an hour across the eastern plains and highlands by late morning. That's the kind of wind that'll rearrange your patio furniture and send your trash cans on a cross-county road trip. Here's the serious part. Humidity's dropping to single digits, which means any spark becomes a wildfire in seconds. Red Flag Warnings are up from 10 A.M. To 6 P.M. For the northeast and east central areas. No outdoor burning today. Not even a little one. Up north near Colorado, you're seeing something completely different — rain and snow showers this morning along the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Tusas Mountains could pick up a few inches above 9000 feet. Roads will be slick, so take it slow up there. Now the regional breakdown. Central New Mexico tops out at 59 degrees with that brisk west wind at 10 to 15 miles an hour. Tonight drops to 25. Northern New Mexico hits 50 degrees, but those winds gust to 35 through the afternoon. You'll feel every bit of it. Tonight falls to 24. Southern New Mexico gets the warmest day at 66 degrees under sunny skies. Tonight settles to 38. Looking ahead — Saturday cools down to low 50s north, near 70 south, with lighter winds. Sunday warms nicely into the 60s and low 70s. Then Monday and Tuesday, moisture returns from the south. Best rain chances south of I-40, with isolated thunderstorms possible. The mountains stay dry. Secure anything loose outside today. Seriously. See you tomorrow. For the extended outlook, check the latest forecast See you tomorrow.
