New Mexico Weather 3/7 Morning - Fire Weather Watch

from The New Mexico Weather Podcast

Good morning. New Mexico. I'm Aaron Jolly. Step outside this morning and you'll feel that crisp March bite. We're waking up to 42 degrees under clear skies, after a low that dipped to 30 overnight. But don't let that chill fool you—today's sunshine is just the warm-up act. Central New Mexico takes center stage with highs hitting 61 degrees under sunny skies. It's perfect weather for that hike you've been putting off. Winds stay light from the southeast, making it feel even nicer. Tonight, look for a quick cooldown down to 31 degrees. Up north, it's a different story. Taos and Santa Fe hover in the low 50s, with gusts hitting 15 miles an hour. That brisk breeze reminds you winter isn't quite done yet. Overnight, temps plummet to 30 degrees, so Dress warmly if you're headed to the ski slopes. Down south. Las Cruces and Truth or Consequences are living up to their names at 69 degrees. Winds shift from east to southeast by late morning, but it's all blue skies. Tonight, lows drop to a mild 39 degrees—ideal for stargazing. In Here's headline, a Fire Weather Watch kicks in Sunday from noon to 9 PM for the Northeast Highlands and Eastern Plains. Gusts could reach 45 miles an hour, with humidity dipping into the single digits. Any spark could turn ugly fast, so hold off on outdoor burning. Sunday brings a statewide warm-up, with Albuquerque jumping to 71 degrees. But Monday night, a Pacific low sweeps in, bringing scattered rain showers and even high-elevation snow above 8,000 feet. Tuesday is our wild card with thunderstorms possible in the north. Then we rebound fast—by Wednesday, sunshine returns and we're back in the mid 70s statewide. In Classic new mexico, sunshine and fire warnings in the same breath. Stay fire smart out there. See you tomorrow. See you this afternoon.
