New Mexico Weather March 5 Midday - Red Flag Warning

from The New Mexico Weather Podcast

Good afternoon. New Mexico. I'm Aaron Jolly. Alright folks, cover your coffee. The wind is absolutely howling across New Mexico today. And it's bringing serious fire danger with it. In the next 24 hours. Step outside right now and those southwest gusts are already whipping dust into the air. This afternoon, sustained winds hit 15 to 20 miles an hour statewide, but the real kickers are those gusts — we're talking 40 to 50 miles an hour in exposed areas. That's strong enough to yank trash cans down the street and make highway driving feel like a wrestling match. Down in Albuquerque, you're climbing to 72 degrees with patchy blowing dust before 5 P.M. Tonight cools to 35 under mostly clear skies. Head south toward Las Cruces and you hit the warm spot — 76 degrees today. Up north around Taos and the mountains, highs only reach the low 60s. And those winds aren't letting up. Here's the critical part. Red Flag Warnings are active until 7 P.M. Tonight for the Sacramento and Capitan Mountains. Humidity drops to single digits. Winds gust to 45. Any spark becomes a wildfire in minutes. Don't burn anything outdoors today. Friday cranks the wind even higher — gusts to 50 miles an hour across eastern New Mexico as a Pacific cold front rolls through. Temperatures drop 26 degrees to 26 degrees. Albuquerque struggles to 60. Northern mountains barely crack the upper 40s. The weekend brings a backdoor cold front Saturday with gusty east winds, then a warming trend Sunday into early next week. Rain chances return Monday and Tuesday, mainly south of I-40, with isolated thunderstorms possible. Mountains could pick up a few inches of snow. Secure anything loose outside today. The wind's not asking permission. For the extended outlook, check the latest forecast as confidence improves. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
