It was reinforced in 1938 in Richard Halliburton’s second book of marvels. It resurfaced during the Apollo moon landings and shuttle era.In 2003 China’s first astronaut Yang Liwei was disappointed when he couldn’t see the great wall from space, but in 2004 Leroy Chiao saved the day by taking a photo of it through a telephoto lens from the international space station. So it seems the only surefire way to see the Great Wall is to take a telescope into space… or visit China!
