Se le diagnosticó un tumor cerebral. Inmediatamente, comenzó a esparcirse por el cuerpo. El 4 de noviembre fue bautizado en la Iglesia Etíope Ortodoxa de Miami, con el nombre de «Berhane Selassie». Durante ocho meses la enfermedad pareció estabilizarse, siguiendo un tratamiento no convencional, con remedios naturales, en la clínica del Dr. Joseph Issels, en Baviera. Pero fue sólo una ilusión. Repentinamente la lucha comenzó a hacerse más difícil. A comienzos de mayo dejó Alemania para volver a Jamaica, pero no logró finalizar su viaje y debió detenerse en Miami.
