THIS IS THE STATE FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH WHERE WE BRING YOU THE HEADLINES THAT MATTER. I'M RACHEL FULTON. Yesterday, East Lansing elected three members to the city council. Incumbent Dana Watson and Ron Bacon were re-elected. Watson will be serving a four year term with newly elected George Brookover. Bacon will serve a two year term. The three replaced Ruth Beier, Mark Meadows, and Aaron Stephens. Both Beier and Meadows resigned during the 2020 summer and Stephens later resigned as mayor. Watson has served the council for a year but said she plans to accomplish more in the next four years. Watson wants to focus on equity, housing, and environmental issues. Brookover said he aims to improve the effectiveness of the city government while Bacon is aiming to improve the city infrastructure such as the public library and housing. The members of the city council will elect the Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem. MSU held its first fall break last week. During the break, students had no classes on Monday and Tuesday to kick off the week of Oct. 24. In a survey conducted by The State News, a majority of students said last week's Fall Break was beneficial to them. Out of the 126 students that responded to the survey, 96 said it helped their mental health. Even though students still had to do homework over break, the time off from classes was appreciated according to the results. After seven years of performing, the band Mover Shaker announced back in January that they are taking a hiatus. At the band's farewell show, a bittersweet appreciation from new and old fans were sparked among the announcement. Ally Evenson warmed the crowd with a few of her catchy rock songs. Her most popular song, "Bite My Tongue" was a personal performance. Her emotions and vulnerability added to her performance. The next performance was by Niiice., a pop punk band with a lot of energetic persona. The band has gotten the crowd moving by doing their first crowd surf of the night. The first minor injury was resulted from the first mosh pit that has occurred. Rough play was what the fans were looking forward to. The last band that performed was Great Death who is from Flint, Michigan. They set the mood by turning off stage lights and bringing out their own natural lights. Nostalgia amongst the crowd and the band recognizable through the night. Fans were thanked for supporting the band throughout their careers and the crowd became emotional reflecting the band's sincere appreciation for their fans. We would like to give a big shoutout to Impact 89FM who has recently been awarded the 2021 National 4 year college radio station of the year. The award was presented by The College Media Association.
