Of Natural Flows and Architectural Currents

from Annotations · host Nico Heller

Nico Andreas Heller in Conversation with Lenka Petrakova.Lenka’s futuristic designs are inspired by her study and love of nature. Improvements in technology, digital design, AI integration and material developments enable her to design organic structures, often on an epic scale, that promote community, are sustainable and operationally highly efficient. Beauty in architecture, as in nature, she maintains, is not a goal in itself, but the manifestation of a well-functioning organism. Is this where the architecture of the early 21st century is headed? In this dialogue, we reflect on some of the dominant currents in architecture today (beyond sustainability) and how these currents impact Lenka’s practice, before taking a closer look at The 8th Continent, a private project she has been working on (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nr_R3sNSvQ ).Lenka Petrakova is an international architect who has worked in New York, Los Angeles, London, Vienna and Bratislava. Since May 2017, she has worked at Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) in London, where she is the Lead Architect. She has worked on over 40 projects in 10 countries and spent most of her time working in high-rise building design. Her personal and academic work has been exhibited internationally in Venice (Venice Biennale), Vienna, Zlín, Bratislava and Beijing. She has received numerous awards, including the 2020 Grand Prix Award for Architecture and Innovation of the Sea from Foundation Jacques Rougerie Génération Espace Mer - Institut de France and the Zlín Design Week Award for Innovation in 2017.For more information about Lenka Petrakova, please visit lenkapetrakova.com. Thus Spake Zarathustra: A Book for All and None (version 2) (includes annotations) by Friedrich Niet Lina The modern British philosopher, Anthony M. Ludovici, said that this text “is unquestionably Nietzsche’s opus magnum.” However, he warns the reader that since “the book with the most mysterious, startling, or suggestive title, will always stand the best chance of being purchased by those who have no other criteria to guide them in their choice than the aspect of a title-page … ‘Thus Spake Zarathustra’ is almost always the first and often the only one of Nietzsche’s books that falls into the hands of the uninitiated.” He therefore recommends reading this text alongside some scholarly annotations, which Ludovici gratefully supplies in the volume read here. To keep Ludovici’s intention, in this version of ‘Zarathustra’ the reader includes these annotations (where available) immediately after the reading. Summary by jvanstan Mark Twain's Autobiography: With An Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine - Volume II by Mark Twain Loyal Books While the Mark Twain Project has created and released a three-volume Mark Twain autobiography with extensive annotations, in the 21st century, this two-volume autobiography was published in 1924 and contains many works never before released. It came 14 years after Twain's death and so, "speaking from the grave", he felt he could be "as frank and free and unembarrassed as a love letter". The autobiographical chapters that he published years earlier in the North American Review, were selected more for their acceptability and potential popularity than for their completely true reflection of his inner thoughts. With the publication of Mark Twain's Autobiography in 1924, the world was introduced to a much more frank and less restrained Twain than had heretofore been seen or heard. This partial Autobiography, in two volumes, consisting of about two-fifths of his known material, was compiled by a personal friend and literary executor Albert Bigelow Paine, who at the time had exclusive access
