Als wij zeggen “catwalk, hands, spins and dips, duckwalks en floor performance”, waar denk je dan aan? De kenner zegt meteen: dat zijn de vijf elementen van vogue (femme)! Ding ding ding, dat is juist, de kenner gaat door voor de koelkast. In deze aflevering hebben we het namelijk over de ballroomscene. Nee, we hebben het dan niet over cha-cha en jive ballroom, oftewel stijldansen. We hebben het dan over black queer culture. En dit doen we met Jeffry Matias de Jesus AKA Roberto Angels Revlon. De Nederlandse Father van de Iconic House of Revlon en de Nederlandse overseer van de Legendary Kiki House of Angels! Als je al een kenner van ballroom bent, dan weet je wellicht dat het vrij competitief kan zijn: meedoen aan balls en categorieën lopen. Maar de ballroomscene is zoveel meer. Het is voor veel queer en trans mensen (van kleur) een plek om echt henzelf te zijn. Een plek waar zij veilig zijn en de haat in het dagelijks leven niet hoeven te ondergaan. Ze kunnen zijn wie ze willen zijn, zij het meer of minder masculien, feminien of androgyn. Het is een plek van zelfontdekking.
