En 1998 edita Sombras de la China, con los arreglos de Kitflus, quien ayuda también en la composición de algunos temas. Posteriormente realiza su homenaje a la canción latinoamericana en Cansiones firmado por Tarrés|Serrat en el año 2000, con adaptaciones de temas populares de varios países de Latinoamérica, y autores reconocidos como Violeta Parra, Víctor Jara, Simón Díaz, José Alfredo Jiménez y Enrique Santos Discépolo, entre otros. En el año 2000 se edita su discografía oficial anterior digitalizada en formato CD. Tras la llegada de la Democracia en Chile, el 26 de abril de 1990, Serrat realiza un concierto en el Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, donde entre otros temas interpreta Volver a los 17 de Violeta Parra, debido a los 17 años que el cantante tenía prohibición de entrar.
