Petzold cleverly uses the love story between Nelly and Johnny to drive and inform a conversation about postwar Berlin. It’s rooted in emotional realism and is narratively straightforward, but join us to discuss the fantastical tone which haunts it and the complexities of identity within the framework of trauma and reconciliation with a horrifying past.
