Serrat inicia el nuevo siglo con su disco Versos en la boca, publicado en 2002, en el que además de temas propios después de cuatro años, da voz con su música a los poetas Tito Muñoz, Eduardo Galeano y Luis García Montero. A finales de 2003 lanza al mercado Serrat sinfónico en colaboración con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Barcelona y Nacional de Cataluña, bajo la dirección musical del maestro Joan Albert Amargós, con la colaboración especial de Ricard Miralles al piano y Roger Blavia a la percusión. En esta producción presenta 15 temas ya conocidos y uno nuevo, el poema de Federico García Lorca de título Herido de amor que Serrat había musicalizado con anterioridad para Ana Belén.
