Laureato con il massimo dei voti all'Università di Bologna in Storia, Ferrero ama "scalare le vette", in tutti i sensi. Oltre alla politica il suo grande amore è infatti la montagna: "io arrampico, faccio ferrata, scio d'inverno, la montagna è libertà, senso di responsabilità perché ti aiuta a crescere, nessuno ti aiuta quando sei in montagna" confessa.
