Não é a primeira vez que muitas pessoas são atingidas por um coronavírus, em 2003 tivemos a SARS e em 2012, a MERS, ambas doenças respiratórias causadas por vírus dessa família. Por isso que o nome oficial do coronavírus de agora é SARS-CoV-2. Devido a esse histórico, já existiam algumas pesquisas sobre esses vírus. Elas já alertavam sobre a circulação na natureza de outro coronavírus capaz de infectar humanos.
