R.I.P. "A Nation of Laws Not Men", 1780-2019

In 1780 John Adams wrote "For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other." It was in the Massachusetts Constitution that he was trying to enshrine the idea that the new U.S. would be "a nation of laws not men." It was a nice idea while it lasted. This week, as we discuss with Ben Wittes of Lawfare, Ryan Goodman of Just Security and Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law Center, that idea met a handful of new challenges that may amount to some of the toughest it has ever faced in the U.S. Now what? We discuss that--and the use of force in Iran--with our brilliant, engaging, insightful guests. Join us.  Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio.
