A bat in Sandoval County, New Mexico, has tested positive for rabies — the ninth animal case this year. The bat was found inside a home and euthanized; now everyone potentially exposed — including pets — must get post-exposure shots. Rabies is almost always fatal but 100% preventable through vaccination, which is legally required for all dogs and cats in New Mexico. If an unvaccinated pet contacts a rabid animal, it must be quarantined or euthanized. Health officials urge: never touch bats, keep pets vaccinated and tagged, and if you’re exposed — even indirectly — seek medical care immediately. Avoid wild animals, don’t feed them, and report any sick or acting-strange wildlife. Teach kids these rules too — and wash any bite or scratch thoroughly with soap and water right away.
